The Professional Master of Education (PME) at NUI Galway has replaced the Professional Diploma in Education as the recognised postgraduate qualification for teaching (post-primary) and provides the professional knowledge, understanding and pedagogical skills required to become a teacher.

The PME is a two year full-time programme for graduates and is recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland for the purposes of registration as a post-primary teacher in Ireland and the EU, as well as other English speaking countries.  The programme is wide-ranging and equips student teachers with the theoretical and conceptual tools necessary for developing creative and flexible approaches to teaching and enables them to address the potentially complex and manifold educational needs of a diverse constituency of pupils in the age range 12-18.

In recognition of the varied and changing roles for the teacher in today's schools, there is also a concern to develop skills in collegiality, team-work, inquiry based practice and whole-school evaluation, in addition to an understanding of educators' ethical and legal obligations, in loco parentis.‌

The PME course for the 2017/19 cohort commenced on Monday, 4th September 2017, with a completion date in May 2019.

A provisional 1st Year PME Academic Calendar for 2017/18 is available here:  PME Calendar for 2017-2018

Meeting Teaching Council Requirements: Formal registration as a teacher in the post-primary school system in the Republic of Ireland is possible on completion of the PME.  New regulations come into place in 2017 for registration by the Teaching Council.

The Teaching Council publishes entry requirements and subject criteria in relation to registration to teach any subject at post-primary level.

Prior to entry into the PME, all applicants must complete a subject declaration form for return to the Teaching Council for each subject.

The completed forms are to be submitted with a candidates application through the Postgraduate Applications Centre.

The School Placement

Throughout each of the two years of the programme students have two school placements (one per year) and these will provide students with a rich experiential base for their initial development as a professional teacher.

Students are responsible for securing their own school placement for year 1 and requirements for the year 1 placement are outlined in the FAQs below.  Upon acceptance for placement, a School Agreement Form‌ must be signed and returned to the School of Education by August 25, 2017.

Please note: Students who will be entering schools to carry out School Placement as part of their Professional Master of Education (NUI) studies in Autumn 2017 will be subject to a Garda Vetting procedure.  At the offer stage, post 1st April 2017, if you are successful in securing an offer on any of the PME programmes, the Postgraduate Applications Centre will record your acceptance of that offer of a place.  However, your registration on the programme is subject to compliance with the University's policy on Garda Vetting.
