Overview: The overarching goals of the Sea Change project are to bring about a fundamental “Sea Change” in the way European citizens view their relationship with the sea, by empowering them – as ‘Ocean Literate’ citizens - to take direct and sustainable action towards healthy seas and ocean, healthy communities and ultimately - a healthy planet.

This research will involve the implementation of a Collective Intelligence methodological approach to collecting data with diverse stakeholders who play a role in advancing Ocean Literacy.

Develop new innovative learning elements specifically communicating Seas and Oceans Health (Leader: NUIG, Participants: UGOT, ECSITE, EUROGEO, WON)


Based on the latest thinking on student-centred learning approaches, interactive e-chapters (video, supporting text, interactive maps, curiosity questions, quizzes, etc.), will be designed in collaboration with teachers, marine educators in higher education and research institutes.  The multi-media resources will be openly available on key ocean and human health topics using iBook and iTunes U platforms.  These will be aligned with relevant science education methodologies and be designed in English but in a format that minimises the cost of future translation if required.

Open Source Gaming Development:

Game technology is seen as a dynamic, fun way to learn.  Sea Change intends to engage with bottom up activities such as "CoderDojo" ( an open source, volunteer led movement, orientated around running free, not-for-profit coding clubs (>400 Dojos globally) for young people.  At a Dojo, young people between 7 and 17 learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programmes and games.  CoderDojo makes development and learning to code a fun, sociable experience.  Sea Change will ask the CoderDojo community to mobilise by developing their own Sea Change games to teach others about Ocean Literacy (OL).

Partners will attend events to set the scene and support development, prizes will be available to incentivise development.  All games will be open source and placed on the T2.2 inventory.
