Biography

Charlotte McIvor is Lecturer in Drama and Theatre Studies at the O'Donoghue Centre for Drama, Theatre and Performance.  Her research specialisations include intercultural performance at the intersection of migration and critical race and gender studies. She is the author of Towards A New Interculturalism: Migration and Contemporary Irish Performance (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016) and her other publications include Staging Intercultural Ireland: Plays and Practitioner Perspectives (co-edited with Matthew Spangler) and Devised Performance in Irish Theatre: Histories and Contemporary Practice (co-edited with Siobhán O’Gorman).  Her work has appeared in Modern Drama, Irish Studies Review and Irish University Review among others and multiple edited collections including ‘That Was Us’ Essays on Contemporary Irish Theatre and Performance. She was the receipt of an Irish Research Council Starter Grant (2014-2015) for the project "Interculturalism, Migration and Performance in Contemporary Ireland." Also a director and dramaturge, recent projects in Ireland include directing Frank McGuinness’ adaptation of Sophocles’ Electra (2014) and multiple iterations of the original devised theatre piece 100 Shades of Grey co-created with NUI Galway students addressing issues of sexual consent and assault. Most recently, she co-directed the film adaptation of 100 Shades of Grey as Lucy’s House Party (with Mick Ruane) for the Manuela Riedo Foundation’s Manuela Programme secondary school education project.  

Research Interests

Modern and contemporary Irish performance; practice as research; theatre for social change; interculturalism, migration and performance; gender and sexuality; transnational feminisms; critical race theory.
