Community Engagement
At NUI Galway, we believe that the best learning takes place when you apply what you learn in a real world context. That's why many of our courses include work placements or community projects.
Community Engagement
Community Engagement
The School of Maths promotes interest and achievement in mathematics in the wider community in addition to its core activities of research and teaching. Here are some of the programmes in which your school can participate.
TY Fridays
On Friday afternoons we welcome groups of Transition Year pupils. Over a couple of hours, they learn about maths in university, maths in the real world, maths related jobs and also about our work at the University. The programme includes two or three short lectures or workshops, small group activities and a short information session on studying mathematics at NUI Galway and the excellent career opportunities for mathematics graduates.

Mathematics Enrichment Course
On Saturday mornings from January until March, we organise a series of free lectures on mathematical problem-solving for secondary school pupils (senior cycle), see www.maths.nuigalway.ie/enrichment/. The material is not aligned to the second level curriculum but to the Irish and International Mathematical Olympiad and other problem-solving contests. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the Irish Mathematical Olympiad and compete for joining Ireland's team in the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Maths Week and PRISM
Maths Week takes place during the month of October. That's when we launch the annual PRISM problem-solving contest for secondary schools. We also host public talks on the NUI Galway campus for interested primary and secondary schools. Finally we can also come visit your primary or second level school for interactive talks and workshops.
For further details read this press release.
Applied Maths Table Quiz
Every March, in association with the Irish Applied Mathematics Teachers' Association, we host the annual Regional Applied Maths Team Quiz. If your school has pupils taking Applied Maths in the Leaving Cert, it should definitely send a team to compete, it's great fun! The winners go on to take part in the All-Ireland Final.
