GYA30 - Postgraduate Diploma in Arts (Mathematics)
The Graduate Diploma in Mathematics bridges the gap between four-year programmes with a substantial mathematical component, and those that are broader in focus or shorter in duration. It opens opportunities to taught and research Masters programmes, as well as the many career options open to Mathematics graduates.
This one-year taught Masters in Mathematics introduces students to advanced mathematical topics and concepts. Although it prepares students for advanced research degrees, graduates are also in great demand in the financial and semi-state sectors. The programme content is dynamic and research-led. This one-year Higher Diploma in Mathematics is aimed at students with a background in Mathematics, equivalent to a Level 7 degree. The participating students study five courses each semester and also undertake a supervised project, during which they are trained in various research techniques and gain an insight into some current area of mathematical research.
This one-year Higher Diploma in Applied Mathematics is for students with a background in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics or related subjects (Engineering, Science) who wish to upgrade their skills in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Modelling. Its aim is to further develop students' abilities to solve real-world problems, using mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, numerics and mathematical modelling. The students study five courses each semester and also work on supervised research project. Upon graduation, the students have the same level of knowledge and experience as a student who has completed a BSc degree in Applied Mathematics.
Clinical applications of genomics are at the forefront of precision medicine. It is now possible to diagnose rare genetic diseases from genomic sequences, while sequencing of tumours has become an important means of refining therapeutic choices in cancer treatment. This taught MSc is aimed primarily at students from a life sciences background, interested in learning about the tools and techniques that can be applied to the analysis of genomics data for these applications. Students will form part of a multidisciplinary cohort, working and sharing modules with students from quantitative backgrounds (registered for the MSc in Computational Genomics described below).
GYS32 - MSc in Computational Genomics
This programme is specifically designed to train the next generation of quantitative scientists and engineers to work in the exciting new field of genomics, with a focus on applications in basic science and in personalized medicine. With backgrounds ranging from mathematics, statistics, physics, computer science and engineering, students of this programme will learn advanced analytical techniques and gain practical experience in applying these techniques to genomics data, collaborating and interacting with life scientists to gain an appreciation of the science and technologies that underpin advances in genomics.
Postgraduate Research Degrees
The Research activity in Mathematics at NUI Galway covers a broad range of topics spanning Algebra, Analysis, Geometry and Topology. There is a particular strength in Computational Algebra, which has led to the establishment of the de Brún Centre, with a mission is to support research in broad areas of algebra and its applications.
This general discipline within the School has an expanding research activity with postgraduate students (PhD and MSc) and postdoctoral researchers frequently involved in collaborative projects with other researchers at NUI Galway, elsewhere in Ireland and overseas. There are three broad related current research areas in statistics. These include methodological work in statistical modelling including random effects and mixed models, semiparametric Bayesian inference, mixture models, and smoothing. Application areas range from agricultural sciences, educational performance, health provision evaluation, to environmental monitoring.
The research activity of the discipline covers a range of topics in both Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, with a particular emphasis on nonlinear elasticity, biomechanics, dynamical systems theory, quantum field theory, conformal field theory, mathematical modelling, analysis of partial differential equations, biomathematics and quantum computation. Members of the discipline are involved in joint projects with other disciplines/research units within the University, and are also involved in a number of international collaborations.
Research in this discipline within the School encompasses a diversity of areas thematically linked to bioinformatics, including genomics, evolutionary biology, population genetics, and computational biology - as well as the development of novel and innovative algorithms utilizing methods adapted from applied statistics, machine learning, graph theory and topology. Research projects currently underway involve close collaboration with both clinician and basic science laboratories across the University and with groups in Europe and the USA, and students have access to designated high performance computing resources to support their research activities.
