Undergraduate Degrees
MATHEMATICAL DEGREES
NUI Galway offers several routes to a degree with mathematics
- Denominated Degrees: When you know from Year 1 which degree you wish to pursue. Choose from: BSc Mathematical Science, BSc Financial Mathematics & Economics, BA Mathematics & Education.
- Undenominated Degrees: When you wish to pursue a degree in mathematics but want to keep your options open in the early years. Choose from: BSc in Mathematics, BSc in Applied Mathematics, BSc in Computing, BA in Mathematics & Another Arts Subject.
- Denominated Degrees from other schools: When you wish to pursue a different degree, with a large dose of mathematical content. Choose from: BSc in Computer Science & Information Technology, BSc in Physics with Theoretical Physics.
MATHEMATICAL DEGREES (Denominated)
BSc in Mathematical Science (Denominated)
Four-year honours degree, covering all aspects of Mathematics and its applications, and giving students a wide range of problem-solving skills favoured by many employers. As students advance through the programme they will specialise their degree: Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Theoretical Physics, Financial Mathematics, Computer Science, or Statistics with Bioinformatics. Further information can be found here. (CAO code GY319, Entry points 2015: 470, Intake: 20)
BSc in Financial Mathematics & Economics (Denominated)
Four-year honours degree with courses in Mathematics, Actuarial Mathematics, Statistics, Probability, Applied Mathematics, Economics and Computer Science. The programme is run jointly by the School of Mathematics and the School of Education. Once they graduate, our students have well-developed quantitative and numerical skills and find that they are in high demand from financial institutions. Note that the Faculty & Institute of Actuaries recognises this programme, and graduates can be exempt from three of the professional Actuarial subjects. (CAO code GY309, Entry points 2015: 505, Intake: 30)
BA in Mathematics & Education (Denominated)
Four-year honours degree, incorporating a teaching training qualification with teaching practice. The programme is run jointly by the School of Mathematics and the School of Education. Graduates will be excellent mathematicians and will be recognised by the Teaching Council of Ireland as qualified post-primary teachers of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The degree was created as a response to the growing need for excellent mathematics teachers in Irish post-primary schools. (CAO code GY109, Entry points 2015: 410, Intake: 25)
MATHEMATICAL DEGREES (Undenominated)
BSc in Mathematics (Undenominated)
Four-year honours degree, covering all aspects of Mathematics, and giving students a wide range of problem-solving skills favoured by many employers. Students take Mathematics as one of their first and second year subjects. They specialise in Mathematics in their third and fourth year. (CAO code GY301, Entry points 2015: 410)
BSc in Applied Mathematics (Undenominated)
Four-year honours degree, covering all aspects of Applied Mathematics. Students take Applied Mathematics as one of their first and second year subjects.
