Biography

I completed my PhD in 2012, which focussed primarily on the development of farmed cod in Ireland.  This was part of the EIRCOD project, the broodstock and breeding programme for Atlantic cod in Ireland.  I have extensive experience in egg incubation, larval rearing and on-growing to market size (8+ years) of marine finfish.  This includes coordinating genetic sampling, evaluating family performance, selecting broodstock, handling broodstock, spawning and developing fertilisation matrices.   Throughout my PhD studies and Post Doc, I have had extensive supervisory experience of research assistants (8), students (9 undergraduate and 5 Masters as primary supervisor) and interns. 

In addition, I have been the project manager for lumpsucker production and research at Carna Research Station since 2014 and has secured >€850,000 in funding for this work to date (BIM and Marine Harvest Ireland).  In the past three years, >350,000 lumpsucker have been transferred to sea cages for use as cleaner fish in salmon cages from CRS.  I maintain active links with industry and research groups on both a national and international (Norway, UK, Canada, Iceland) level. In 2016 I received ICUF visiting researcher funding to visit with Canadian cleanerfish producers in Newfoundland and New Brunswick.


 I am currently the senior post-doctoral researcher at Carna Research Station with responsibility for exploring funding opportunities for finfish research, particularly in relation to the use of cleaner fish in the salmon industry, exploration of novel finfish diets, and the development of broodstock and breeding protocols for emerging finfish species.
